WA Wildflower Season, A Campervan Guide Through the Wheatbelt
There's a moment somewhere east of Perth, usually around Beverley or Quairading, when the roadside goes from dry brown paddocks to an explosion of yellow, white and pink that stretches as far as you can see. If you've never driven through WA's wildflower season, it's genuinely one of the most surprising things this state does.
Gloria and Grace travel through the Wheatbelt every year during wildflower season.
When to go
The season runs from late July through to October, with the peak depending on where you are. The Wheatbelt tends to flower from August through September. The further north you go toward Mullewa and Kalbarri the earlier the season starts.
The route we love
Head east from Perth through the hills to Beverley, then follow the Wheatbelt Way through Quairading, Corrigin, Kulin and Lake Grace. This loop takes you through some of the most wildflower-rich country in the state, with everlastings, wattles and native orchids lining every roadside.
Day 1: Perth to Beverley to Wave Rock
Leave Perth early and head through the Darling Range to Beverley, a beautiful old town with a fantastic aeronautical museum worth a quick stop. Continue south through Quairading and Corrigin (stop at the Dog in a Ute museum-yes, really) and push on to Hyden and Wave Rock. Camp at Wave Rock Caravan Park right at the base of the rock. Waking up next to a 2.7 billion year old granite wave with wildflowers at your feet is something else entirely.
Day 2: Hyden to Lake Grace to Narembeen
From Hyden head through Lake Grace and up through Kulin, the sunflower capital of WA and into Narembeen. The roadsides along this stretch are spectacular in August and September. Camp at Narembeen Caravan Park or find a free spot at one of the many rest areas along the way.
Day 3: Narembeen to Bruce Rock to Perth via Merredin
Wind north through Bruce Rock and Merredin, a great heritage town with the Central Wheatbelt Visitor Centre worth a stop, then follow the Great Eastern Highway back to Perth. The drive home through the golden wheat country with wildflowers in full bloom is a perfect way to end the trip.
Glory tip
Gloria and Grace's solar power means you can camp freely throughout the Wheatbelt without needing a powered site. Your WA National Parks Pass covers entry to Lesueur National Park and other reserves along the way, included with every hire.
